      Early life. Baptised as Askala Maryam ("Askal of Mary," a type of flower), but using the given name Zewditu, the future Empress was the eldest daughter of the then Negus (or King) Menelik of Shewa, the future emperor Menelik II. Zewditu is an Amharic word meaning "the Crown", though it sometimes appears erroneously Anglicized as "Judith", with which it is not cognate. Emperor Menelik II GCMG (Ge'ez: ዳግማዊ ምኒልክ, dagmäwi minilik [nb 1]), baptized as Sahle Maryam (17 August – 12 December ), was Negus [nb 2] of Shewa (–89), then Nəgusä Nägäst [nb 3] of Ethiopia from to his death. At the height of his internal power and external prestige, the process of territorial expansion and creation of the modern empire-state had.
